Domestic service is very important: it allows households to deal with housework, childcare or eldercare and yet have their own occupation.
Convention 189 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) promotes decent working conditions in the domestic service sector. Peru has not yet ratified it.
What does decent work mean? It implies a job in which the same labor rights granted to other sectors are recognised and enforced, and employees are decently treated. It also means that it should only be performed by adults who reached the minimum legal working age.
Children must not work in domestic service of any kind, too often concealed as “patronage” or diminished my an alleged familiar-like relationship.
In most cases, vulnerable and helpless children and adolescents in domestic service are exposed to discrimination, exploitation and other forms of abuse.
