Gracias Manu.
On the surface, there is little to distinguish “Adela” from any one of the other residents at a home for the elderly in RÍmac, Lima. This elderly woman with the impish smile, razor-sharp sense of humor, and admitted addict of all things sweet could be anyone’s grandmother.
Originally from a town in the Andean region, Adela has lived all of her adult life in Lima, where she served as a domestic worker for many years. Having been separated from her surroundings for so long, she gradually lost contact with her loved ones. Nearly three years ago, Adela was diagnosed with terminal cancer. This would be a terrible situation for anyone, but for someone with no social support and extremely limited financial means, it was even more devastating. She was not able to work and could not stay in her employer’s house, and had no money or health insurance. With the help of La Casa de Panchita, Adela was placed in an institution for the elderly, where she now receives regular medical attention, meals, and companionship from other residents. Once a week, members of the team and volunteers from.
La Casa de Panchita pay Adela a visit it was during one of these visits that I met her. They meet with the medical staff to get the latest on her condition, and also bring her many of the necessities which the institution is unable to provide her. These include certain types of food (including sweets!), clothing, and sanitary undergarments. Adela, despite her incredibly difficult situation, is a delight to spend time with and somehow manages to lift the spirits of those who come to visit her. While Adela’s situation is different from most, it is not totally unique. Domestic workers, especially those without family and those who have been illegally denied benefits by their employers, often face crippling financial problems at the end of their careers.
